Wannadoo Version wont flash

Hello.  First post and I was hoping to be well on the way to having a flashed Livebox now but ...

I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong but I have a Wannadoo branded Inventel Livebox on F/W V5.00-rc8L-uk.dwb and it just does not want to take the 5_04_3-uk.dwb (Telnet Exploit version) using the RGWRepair.exe file.

I presume the repair tool will work on the Wannadoo versions of the Livebox.  I have also tried flashing to a version that was on the disc supplied with the router (v5-00-RC5.1-uk.dwb) and that too fails.

I am getting the recovery mode three lights displaying on the router after powering up and can see from the task manager networking TAB there is data flowing to the router and I've estimated the saize to be correct for the size of the firmware file.

I'm on Win XP with no firewall switched on, and have tried with manually setting the IP details to 192.168.1.1 / 192.168.1.2 and 10.0.0.1 / 10.0.0.2 for the router and PC respectivley.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong.  I have also tried inputting the commands in the wireless name field with the current firmware but they fail to pull the telnetd file from the FTP server I have running on the PC.  I have also renamed the file to 'u'.

Any help or pointers would be great ta.

Wannadoo is good

I've successfully downgraded & subsequently flashed the HAH firmware onto several Wannadoo branded units.

The RGWRepair.exe (on XP) works fine for these. No point in trying to use the expliot until you have the telnet exploit version onboard.

If you get REALLY stuck, I can offer a loan of a serial port console board - then you can at least see what the BusyBox is actually doing.

Cheers,
Derek.

You can also setup TFTP on windows - although this isn't documented the steps are similar to that used for Linux, if you are savvy you'll figure out what to do from what is already documented. I've done and it works much better than the sucky RGWRepair.exe utility which I NEVER got this to work EVER!

I believe you need a straight bit of cable between your PC and livebox don't have anything else in the way when using the RGWRepair util - Also make sure you are using the RIGHT port...  Its the YELLOW one.

Having said that I prefer the linux method as its much easier to debug and setup.  If you are a linux kind of guy that is.

Do you need to reflash?

If the livebox is running Orange firmware < 5.04 then the telnet exploit hasn't been patched, it was only fixed in version > 5.04 which is why we get your to reflash back to at least this version.

So you should be able to skip that phase and just proceed to breaking in but you are a having problem with that too and a serial console cable is going to be no help here.

If breaking in is not working then double check what release its really running.

Perhaps some of the others on the forum can relay their experience its been a while since I've done this.

RGWRepair.exe

I don't know if this will be any help but when using the repair tool in windows does the on screen prompt go all the way through to instructing you to wait until the box reboots? If is does then it sounds like the reflash is working properly. One thing which I fell foul of was changing ip address settings too many times on too many boxes and my head got scrambled. It took a while to figure out that my windows box NIC was still set to a specific IP address and was not obtaining the address  automatically when the livebox booted up. I had to reset the network settings on the windows box and do a reboot of windows before the browser would see the box. Try just pinging 192.168.1.1 with the box booted up and connected to make sure that it is reachable.

Thnaks for all the help so far

Hi all, well just got in from work and lots of help to go on  Thanks.

Well in answer to Allanyr

There seems to be no issue with the IP Addressing.  I always configure the LAN settings on the NIC manually, there is also nothing between the PC and router. Only a CAT5 patch cable. The repair tool gets to the 2nd stage that shows the progress bar after firing the FW down the ethernet cable to the router, the progress bar just then completes and then the 'finish' button is then clickable.  When clicked it just shuts the repair tool down.  The router does not reboot at all and just sits there with the three central LED's on.  Just to mention again there is activity on the LED's when the PC is passing the f/w file to the router and I have verified it with the networking tab on the task manager.  After the firmware is passed over I have to unplug the power to reset it and it then ends up with the 192.168.1.1 default address, I presume this is just down to the factory reset 'hold button 1 while powering up' stage though.  It's just the firmware never changes from V5.00-rc8L-uk.

In answer to Brett

Yeah I assumed the current firmware is pre 5.04 and have tried the commands in the wireless naming field but nothing.  I presume I use the semi colon before the commands as this is one thing that stood out as I have had a little experience with Linux and would nmot use it.  I've also checked the version of firmware it's running by using the http://192.168.1.1/testinfo.html URL and it too shows the same version.  Do you know of another way that's more accurate?

Thanks for the offer of a loan on the serial port console board Derek.  I may just take your offer up if I eventually admit defeat.  Is it possible to do it the TFTP way without a serial console cable though?

I am a little familiar with Linux etc from owning a Joggler and having a play around with that, but that's all it really was, just having a play.  I think if I sit down long enough with something I generally fathom it out but the router has really got me stumped.  I may be back sooner rather than later for more help

Thanks once again all.

re-flashing

I seem to remember in the long and distant past and the not quite so long and distant past.

well i re-flashed my first livebox and had a nightmare, thpought it had not flashed and it had but my ips were screwwy or browser cache was kicking in or similar.

then six months later i won 2 for 99p re-flashed them and had similar/same problems.

the instructions are correct but need to be followed to the letter. then they work.

i am due a fourth so will fully document every screenshot (if i get it)

Thanks Dean

I've just been trying to have a play with the TFTP server on Windows XP and I can see the incoming request from, what I assume, to be the Redboot on 10.7.58.112 after I have directly connected the patch cable into the yellow port and activated the recovery mode using button 1, but it goes not further.  I think I need to have the fw I want copy over the 'factory_script' but I am feeling a bit out of my depth and dont want to brick it completely!

Thanks for refunding the 99p postage too for the Current Cost board I ordered.

Think I am going to call it a night and have another go tomorrow.  My head is feeling a bit fried

Don't 'force' an IP address

When using rgwrepair.exe, just leave the XP network settings to 'obtain automatically'. The rgwrepair.exe will sort these out as needed.

Don't 'force' an IP address

Cheers for the info Derek, I tried that and it's still the same.  I can see the file get transferred to the router and the progress bar reaches 100%, I click finish, repair tool shuts and the router just sits there with the central 3 lights on and does not reboot.  the /!\ light flickers when the file is being transferred and the central three lights are also on indicating the recovery mode.

TFTP sorted and it still won't take a firmware

Well I managed to get the TFTP32 server running on the PC and managed to get the router to pull the firmware file but only when I changed the name 'factory_script' from 'factory_script_crypt' as Wireshark showed the router attempting to look for 'factory_script' rather than 'factory_script_crypt'

It then pulled the file no problem, but again the router just sits there and a manual reboot shows the firmware version has not changed.  This kind of proves the repair program is doing what it should aswell as the TFTP method.  It just will not reboot with the new fw and resorts to the rc8 version.

I'm really at a loss now.  Any further help would be great

Well how easy was that!

I've finally got an Orange router that's now got the v5.04.3 firmware on.  It was the Wannadoo router that was stopping it, cheers for the info g7pkf.  Must be something to do with the version as I ahve noticed the Wannadoo one is a DV4210-WA [WAnnadoo?] rather than a DV4210-WU and that's the reason it would not take the firmware.

I decided to buy another and managed it for a fiver, although I have another coming pre-flashed with the HAH firmware, thats again g7pkf.

Cannot believe just how easy it was once I was trying on the right version of the Inventel Router.  Right now for stage 2, Telnet access.

Thanks all for the advice so far, just a bit of a weird one
