Hi,

I have just found this site, very interesting.

My question is will the Orange Livebox work with a Virgin Media cable connection, or will I have to go down a different route for any home automation connection.

Any info on this greatly appreciated.

Fredco.

Livebox is not a router

"My question is will the Orange Livebox work with a Virgin Media cable connection, or will I have to go down a different route for any home automation connection."

To be clear the livebox is repurposed and no longer functions as a router or as a Wireless Access Point, it will be a node on your network using your existing VM router

I use it with VM's "Super Hub"

Thanks for clearing that up

Thanks for clearing that up for me kevinT, I hadn't realised that point.

I have an earlier Motorola "modem/adaptor jobby", connected to a Belkin 4 port router with wifi, I presume I just use one of the ethernet ports on that.

Points to note

Whilst we are on the subject, it's worth reading the info on this page of the wiki

http://www.dbzoo.com/livebox/hah_installation - especially the points entitled ...

Once the firmware is installed the following points will be useful:

VM Router

"I have an earlier Motorola "modem/adaptor jobby", connected to a Belkin 4 port router with wifi"

I would think that this combination while suitabe for use with  the livebox, is unlikely to be suitable for use on a VM cable connection for much longer. With the "doubling" of speeds, you are going to need a new router/modem to be able to use even the lowest speed. I would contact VM, and tell them you are concerned, and see if you can blag a new one

The Super hub is, I would say OK rather than super, it has wireless G & N and 4 ports and will replace both your current devices.

OK Hub

I fully agree. The 'superhub' is more like 'almost OK', certainly not 'super'. For example, when port forwarding, it does not support remapping of the ports along the way. Even my old Buffalo hub alllowed this.

That said, the Virgin cable feed speeds are pretty fine.

Agreed

"For example, when port forwarding, it does not support remapping of the ports along the way"

Yes this is annoying. It is possible to run the VM "Almost OK Hub" as a modem and use your own router/access point, but so far I have worked around this limitation
